5 reasons to get a library card
September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. Libraries are our community’s hidden treasures, connecting us to new books and topics. If you don’t already have a library card, here are 5 reasons why you should sign up for one today.
1. It’s free
Library cards are free to sign up for. Each library system is different, but you typically have to show proof of residence like a driver’s license or utility bill to show that you live in the community. Some libraries provide children with wallets to house their library card, encouraging responsibility and independence.
2. Children’s programming
The library provides a wealth of children’s programming all year round. Children often have the opportunity to attend story time, participate in arts & crafts, create Lego projects, and meet special speakers. Libraries sponsor programs like 1000 books before Kindergarten, encouraging children and families to read, read and read some more.
3. Print and online resources
As more people use smartphones and tablets to enjoy books and audiobooks, libraries continue to provide free resources through Libby, Flipster, and Hoopla. Overdrive provides ebooks and audiobooks, while Flipster provides magazines. Hoopla allows patrons to borrow ebooks, audiobooks, and movies. These resources can be downloaded to your device, then enjoyed like any traditional book, audiobook or magazine. The best thing with these is that there are typically no late fees as the checked out item is automatically returned to the library on the due date.
4. Community resources
Libraries offer free community resources and workshops on different topics. Some show movies, host coloring book classes, teach geneaology, and bring in speakers.
5. Access to other libraries
Many public libraries belong to a consortium of other libraries in the county or region, allowing you to access materials from not only your neighborhood library but from numerous others in your area. You can borrow and return materials from other libraries at your neighborhood libraries. In addition, you can attend workshops and programs that other libraries host.
Go ahead and get your library card today. It’s free and can open worlds for you and your family.
