The beginning of the year is the time to recognize fantastic works of literature that were able to touch our lives. Reading a book always brings us a sense of comfort and takes us to another world. For children, it develops their language skills and becomes their special bond with their parents. Hotdog, illustrated and written by Doug Salati tells the story of a puppy who has grown tired of spending summer in the city. He finally gets his wish when his owner brings him to the sea, where he finds calmness near the sea. This outstanding book’s lesson will teach not only children but also adults to enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
Caldecott Honor Books include:
Ain’t Burned All the Bright, written by Jayson Reynolds and illustrated by his best bud Jason Griffin tells the story of what it’s like to be black in America. This symbolic book is sure to open the eyes of many teens about what (as said by the author) it feels like to actually breathe.
Berry Song, written by Michaela Goade tells the story of a girl and her grandmother who gather gifts from the earth. Together, they take with them the joy and gratitude they have for the Earth as well as for the lessons that were brought to them by the generations that came before.
Choosing Brave: How Mamie Till-Mobley and Emmett Till Sparked the Civil Rights Movement, written by Angela Joy and illustrated by Janelle Washington tells the real-life story of Till-Mobley the mother of 14-year-old Emmett Till who was brutally murdered in 1955, and how she was able to channel her grief by starting an activism that will change history forever.
Knight Owl, written by Christopher Denise tells the story of an owl who has always dreamed of being a knight. After many of the knights had gone missing and a frightening intruder threatens the castle, he is determined to protect the castle in his own special way.
